Four tips to make the most of using a white noise machine to make sure any noise would be drowned out for your little one to get the best sleep.

Creating the best, most restful sleep environment is going to help you be successful in helping your little one get the best rest possible. Having a room that's pitch black, a comfortable temperature, and using a white noise machine that drowns out noise will all help create an amazing sleep space for your little one. Just using that white noise machine isn't enough to make it fully effective in creating that perfect sleep environment. The placement of where the white noise machine is can help in drowning out any noise that may wake your little one.
Here are four tips to take into consideration when using a white noise machine:
Tip #1 - Keep it In-Between the Door and Your Little One
Most of the noise you are going to have to worry about that may wake your little one up from is on the other side of the door.
Noisy siblings
Pets
Doorbell Ringing
TV
Putting the white noise machine in-between your little ones bed and the door will create a barrier of sound that should drown out any loud noises that may wake them from their sleep during naps or night time.
On the nights that there may be fireworks going on outside (e.g. New Years Eve, Fourth of July, etc.) it's a good idea to move the white noise machine to closer to the window in the room and turn it up a little louder to drown out the firework pop, booms, and crackling.
Tip #2 - In-Between Two Shared Walls
Do you have two kiddos that bedrooms are next to each other and share a wall? Or maybe your little one shares a wall with the kitchen or TV room. Having the white noise on the shared wall will help drown out the noise that the other sibling may make in the middle of the night or the loud TV playing in the TV room.
At our house we have three rooms that are all together: my husbands gym/home office and Goose's room sandwiches Bub's room. Because of this we have a white noise machine in Bub's room that is on the shared wall with my husbands gym and he sleeps in his bed that is against the shared wall with Goose's room. Goose's white noise machine is on the wall that he shares with his brother and his bed is on the other side of the room. This way all the shared walls are being noise dampened by a white noise machine.
Tip #3 - Use Multiple White Noise Machines When Room Sharing
Do you have siblings sharing a bedroom? It's best to use a white noise machine for each of your little ones. You want to make sure at least one of the white noise machines is in-between the two beds and the other one in-between the door and your other little one. By each child having their own white noise machine it helps drown out any noise they may make in the middle of the night. This could be from waking in the middle of the night or even if they are coming to bed at a separate time than their sibling.
Tip #4 - Decibel level
Lastly, we want to make sure that the white noise is set to a level that is loud enough but safe for little ears that drowns out the noise. The AAP recommends that white noise isn't any louder than 50 decibels (a shower running/a vacuum on). If your white noise is far away from the crib/bed it'll be on louder. There are free apps that you can use to determine how loud your white noise is.
To find out the decibel level your white noise machine is at, open the free app and place it in your little ones crib/bed and then turn on the white noise machine where you have it placed. This will tell you how many decibels your white noise is at.
Using a white noise machine is just the first step in creating the perfect sleep environment for your little one. Taking into account all the above tips will help you place the white noise machine in the best place to most effectively drown out any noise that may wake your little one.
